The many shops, malls and outdoor markets hold a multitude and endless variety of items that appeal to every taste and culture. If you’re shopping in Cancun for designer clothes and accessories, you won’t be disappointed. You’ll find them in the several modern malls throughout the area. These items can also be found in boutiques in hotels, malls and aboard cruise ships, though the items can be pricey, as one would expect.

Cancun is a shopper’s dream come true. Handcrafted items such as jewelry (be sure to check out the silver pieces), baskets, folk art, toys, handmade embroidered clothing, straw hats, etc., can be found in stalls along most streets and in open air markets. Vendors in these areas are most anxious to sell their wares and will gladly bargain with you over the price.

Let’s not forget the practical and very necessary pleasure of shopping for restaurants. There is a wide variety of Mexican, American, Japanese, Italian, French and others guaranteed to please any palate. Most of the hotels offer dining, some with a 5-star rating. There are hundreds of fine restaurants throughout the area as well as small cafes and street vendors selling all types of food and snacks. Be sure to check the credentials of eating establishments to be sure they meet all standards for food preparation and service.

Your trip wouldn’t be complete without shopping in Cancun. There are shops at every destination on the Mexican Riviera including Cancun City, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres and other areas. Some of the well known shopping areas are:

Cancun City: There is a large, open-air bazaar on Tulum Avenue. Vendors there are willing to haggle over the price of their merchandise. This can be a fun-filled event, complete with children tugging at your clothes to sell various items to vendors hawking their wares and calling out to you as you pass by.

Playa del Carmen: This is the place to go for a wonderful selection of Mexican handcrafts. While you’re there, don’t forget to purchase fine perfume for yourself and loved ones. There’s a plethora of well-known perfumes to be found at very good prices.

If you’re in need of a U.S. or Canadian consulate office, the place to go is to the Plaza Caracol, which is at the center of the hotel zone. Fine Mexican goods, international merchandise and fine restaurants can be found here.

Plaza Kukulcan and Plaza Flamingo: Designer boutiques, fast food courts, theaters, bars, bowling and restaurants abound in these malls many shops that cater to your every need and whim.

La Isla: Situated under a large canopy on the Nichupte Lagoon, there are more than 150 stores representing many countries. This shopping area has entertainment as well. The architecture has the look of Venice, with many canals and bridges.

Mercado Veintiocho: This is one of the best places to buy Mexican souvenirs.

Isla Mujeres: A tiny island with local craftsmen, silver jewelry and clothing.

Cozumel: The shops with imports from many countries and a variety of malls have made this a place for more than snorkeling. Its jewelry shops have beautiful handmade items, with diamonds featured in much of it.

While Cancun is the destination of many who want the clear blue-green waters, white sand and sun, shopping in Cancun is a pleasurable experience as well. And, it’s located in a duty-free zone.

This article explores the necessity of a failsafe backup to electronic navigation: traditional NOAA navigational charts.

In this day-and-age you can easily insulate yourself in false sense of security: passwords for emails and bank accounts, OnStar, Mapqwest, GPS in your car or on your boat. But the wonders of today’s technology, while convenient, can have occasion to fail.

When it comes to boating, a false sense of security can lead to trouble at sea. “Collisions account for 80% of all reportable recreational boating accidents and 78% of non-reportable accidents, totaling an estimated insurance loss of over $450 million a year from nearly 100,000 claims,” says a 2007 Hydrographic Services Review Panel report. “A major cause of claims is ‘striking a submerged object’ and groundings, two scenarios in which accurate NOAA surveys and charts can play a major role.”

With electrical or battery failure a possibility, and only a small percentage of boats with backup power sources, relying solely on GPS or a chartplotter can be risky. It goes back to an old sailing rule: “Don’t rely on one method of navigation.” Richard Sillcox, NOAA’s chief of Chart Update Service adds, “Technology is not foolproof, and unforeseen circumstances may affect your ability to take advantage of that technology.” Among serious mariners, the consensus is always this: never rely on only one means of navigation.

The solution? Printed navigational charts. In comparison to the flash and interface of a digital-age navigation solution, a chart may be considered by some as an antique, but in the inopportune moment, when the batteries fail, it’s the chart that will get you to safety.

That’s not to say navigational charts have not entered the 21st century. At present NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration) and the U.S. Coast Guard have established consistent methods of gathering cartographic data and uploading it to servers at OceanGrafix, an on-demand navigational chart printer. These daily updates allow every Ocean Grafix print-on-demand (POD) navigational chart to be 100% up to date at the time of printing.

NOAA charts include topographical information such as water depths, height of land, natural features of the seabed, details of the coastline, navigational hazards, and information on tides and man made structures.

This need-to-know-information can be yours by making sure your boat is equipped with an up-to-date navigational chart. Charts are an excellent complement to any digital/electric navigational tool. As electronic screens tend to be small and can be unreadable in bright sunlight, a chart is always readable. And the large format of a chart allows you to see the big picture and detail that would perhaps be lost on small digital screens.

NOAA lithographic charts are considered the standard when it comes to paper charts. They are the final product of NOAA’s expert cartographers who collect, interpret and then apply critical chart corrections on an ongoing basis. Unlike electronics, which require boaters to pan out and zoom in, paper charts always provide the “big” picture. “Anytime you zoom in, you’ve lost the relationship with other parts of the chart,” says Richard Sillcox, NOAA’s chief of Chart Update Service. “With paper charts, you can easily see those relationships.”

Another plus for having updated paper navigational charts is that electronic chart products may contain outdated NOAA data, depending upon when the cartridge or software was purchased and whether the boater has gotten the data updated.

Many recreational mariners are wary of the reliability of electronics. “Any part of electronic navigation can – and will – fail,” says Jeff Siegel, a BoatU.S. member in Maine. “Failures usually happen at the worst, most inopportune time. Redundancy of electronics is helpful, but 99% of all boaters don’t have any electronic backup for the failure of the GPS system. Paper charts are the ultimate backup to electronics.”

In short, navigational charts are a fail-safe backup to electronic systems and in general offer the big picture when it comes to navigating. When you add in the up-to-date-at-time-of-printing features of OceanGrafix POD charts, you have the best of both worlds.

When Cultures Cross: Hand Gestures to Avoid

Many of us subconsciously use gestures while we talk. In most cases, they’re innocent movements. We wave to greet somebody on the other side of the room. We give a thumbs-up to people when we’re pleased. And when we’re quoting another person, we sometimes make those marks in the air with our fingers.

But in other cultures, some of our everyday gestures are obscene or insulting. If you interact with somebody from one of these places, it’s a good idea to know what your body language is really saying to him or her. The more you know, the less likely you are to inadvertently insult someone or accidentally give that person the wrong idea.

When you nod your head, you’re saying “yes” or agreeing with the other person. But in some parts of the world (like Greece and Bulgaria), the nod is actually “no” or an indication of disagreement.

In many Middle Eastern cultures, the left hand is not used very often. That’s the “cleanup hand,” so offering it to somebody as a greeting, or when passing an object to him or her, is just rude.

Giving someone the “okay” sign (making a circle with one finger while the other three point upward) usually means “That sounds good to me” or “I like that.” Be careful, though, as this gesture’s meaning varies from one culture to another. In Japan, the gesture indicates money. In Germany and Brazil, the “okay” sign is an obscene gesture. And in France, it stands for “zero” or “worthless.”

The “come here” gesture that you make by wiggling your index finger is rude in many other cultures. Plus, many Americans are annoyed by this gesture. It’s probably best to avoid using it at all.

Another finger-related problem is pointing. Your Mom probably told you that it’s rude to point – and it is! In many cultures of the Far and Middle East, pointing with the index finger is a no-no. Instead, people point with the entire hand or, in some instances, the thumb.

Passing a small item – money, for example – to another person usually requires only one hand. In Japan, people use both hands, even when it’s not physically necessary. Using just one hand is an insult.

These are just a few of the gestures that can be taken the wrong way. Before you make your trip to another country, pick up a book on local etiquette and customs. You’ll find lots of valuable information, some of which can help you avoid a lot of glares from the people around you.

Another good way to figure out what’s going on is to watch what people of that culture do. Don’t be afraid to ask what a gesture means. In most cases, the other person will be glad to explain to you. This offers you a great opportunity to tell that person what the gesture means in your own culture. The “customs exchange” can be a valuable lesson for you both.

Those booking cheap flights to Delhi may be interested to learn of a new initiative to be introduced by authorities in the city ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Games.

Mangat Ram Singhal, the social welfare minister, announced that, in a bid to make Delhi’s streets more welcoming to visitors, the capital city is cracking down on those caught begging, reports the Times of India.

Two new mobile courts have been launched to assist with this drive and those who see people begging can report to the unit. It will then travel to the spot in question and find those asking locals and holidaymakers for money.

Mr Singhal is quoted by the news provider as saying: “The nature of punishment depends on the old records of the beggar. If he or she is found to have been forced into beggary, then they would be given only counselling sessions.”

The Commonwealth Games, which could provide a great excuse to book a cheap flight to Delhi, opens in October next year.

With 300 or more sunshine days a year making for superb winters, more and more people are becoming aware of Dubai as a holiday destination. Dubai has made immense efforts at marketing itself and now has great exposure on the global stage. A PR Success story on a gigantic scale Dubai is now a top vacation spot. As a visitor to Dubai you will find that some of the laws are ambiguous. For instance while prostitution is essentially illegal you will find many Dubai Escorts plying their trade with impunity.

If you are visitor to Dubai and you want have an experience with the world renowned Dubai escorts it’s best to bear in mind that prostitution is illegal and for you safety and security be more discreet in pursuit of your pleasures. This brings us back to Dubai’s stunning PR success. Part of the success is based on the scale and ambition of the construction projects that have been completed and are still ongoing. Many of these projects are grand five star hotels as well as a six star hotel and the world’s only seven star – the Burj Al Arab.

The list of International five star hotels are too numerous to list in this article, but to mention just a few there is the 1500 room Atlantis Palm who some consider a seven start resort. The Dusit Dubai a 40 floor hotel tower on Sheikh Zayed Road. On Jumeirah Beach you will find the Madinat Mina A’Salam. Another five start hotel, this one on Sheikh Rashid Road is Raffles hotel. The Importance of these hotel s when it comes to hiring a Dubai Escort is that the elite Dubai Escorts discreetly use the five star luxury hotels in Dubai for incalls. For those of you who are novices when it comes to hiring an Escort an incall is when you go to visit an Escort at her Hotel or apartment. If you don’t want to use you own residence an incall will save you the expense of acquiring your own hotel accommodation.

In conclusion you will find that when it comes to the elite Dubai Escorts it’s worth the expense to enjoy yourself in a five star luxury hotel safe in the knowledge that discretion and security is guaranteed.

After getting off their flight to Australia, older holidaymakers particularly enjoy getting involved in cultural activities, it has been suggested.

This is according to a new study by Saga Holidays which indicates that people over the age of 50 would rather spend time learning about new cultures than lie on a beach to get a tan.

Some 32 per cent of respondents say they look forward to experiencing new ways of life when going on holiday, while seven per cent are keen to meet new people.

Commenting on the findings, Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of the Saga Group – which recently found that Minis are particularly popular cars with older people – said that many older tourists are “great adventurers” who enjoy gaining an insight into their holiday destinations.

“It’s no surprise to us that they seek adventure and new cultures. Good food, good company and active sightseeing around the world are great contributors to that healthy and uplifting feeling that is more important than just catching the rays,” he added.

Fair-trade purchasing is in style. Luckily, buying responsibly is an easy task in Barcelona thanks to shops like Farafina in the Born. Owners Martina Millà and Youssouf Siby opened the vibrant boutique three years ago with a vision to help artisans in Western Africa, where Youssouf is from originally. Half of the merchandise in Farafina is made from recycled and found materials by men and women in Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali and South Africa. What was essentially trash has been converted into chic and artsy products that one would expect to see in a gallery on calle Enric Granados.

The two metal chairs in Farafina’s display window would be a unique addition to any design flat in town. Made of found soda pop tops, the chairs are sturdy, comfy and really cool looking; they are also more or less made of garbage (€180). The scrap metal frames and mirrors that line the shop’s walls are also well crafted and creative plus a real barging at a little over €100. For kids there are tin and wire mobiles with floating giraffes, owls and storks painted in bright colors. The shop’s best sellers are striped bracelets which come in turquoise, sunflower and earth tones. The bracelets are made from old plastic flip flops which an artisan melts down and twists into jewelry. If it wasn’t for the photos in Farafina explaining the process, one would never know that these accessories were once someone’s sandal.

Besides the fact that Farafina is brimming with eccentric and stylish home decoration items, it works directly with African artisans who are helped by the store’s sales. “I couldn’t do this alone. Youssouf knows how to deal with the artisans culturally because he’s from Mali. In Africa the individual is less important, you work not with one person but with the whole family,” said Martina, who is Catalan. With Youssouf’s cultural connection, Martina’s eye for style and a common goal to give back, the couple is a winning team. They are committed to Farafina and their cause to promote fair trade products from Africa which are reused and recycled.

On the other side of town in Olokuti there are recycled goods for sale from Africa and all over the world. The Gracia store advertises itself as catering to responsible consumerism and fair trade, plus provides a communal space for locals to come see films, music and presentations. Among its many reused-recycled items, Olokuti carries Coll.Part bags (€6), which are fair-trade sacks from Cambodia. These sturdy pouches come in a diverse pallet of colors and make ideal market bags or even unusual handbags. For something a bit tougher, Olokuti also offers Bandero Dura wallets, packs, purses and cell phone covers made from black recycled rubber (€13 and up). From Masagua, Guatemala, Olokuti imports patchwork picture frames and kaleidoscopic jewelry boxes crafted from folded paper in a woven design.

Around the corner on Torrent de L’Olla, the tiny shop Lindos Ramos sells crazy odds and ends like Mexican wrestler masks, terry-cloth bicycle seat covers, figurines and recycled purses and earrings. Owner Lindsay Dos Ramos from Venezuela makes sparkly earrings out of bottle caps depicting images of Frida Kahlo and clothing adorned with recycled magazine art. She also carries glossy paper handbags imported from Brazil (€30), along with rings and broaches to match.

Perhaps Lindsay’s most unique recycled items are her dresses. Joyful and very ‘Gracia’ these hand-made dresses are accentuated with reused and found-object trimmings. A broken watch becomes a button and an old photo a dress pattern when Lindsay is at the sewing machine. Lindos Ramos also offers fun reused-art workshops for kids a few times a year. Lindsay is another inspired individual who sees art where others see junk, proving once again that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The only gift that is more heartfelt than a recycled one is one that the giver makes himself. For those who feel inspired to turn their odds-and-ends drawer and soda pop caps into art or jewelry, Marudama bead store can provide the missing links. A tiny shop on calle Verdi in Gracia, Marudama has all the wires, clasps, ribbons, bobs and accent beads to satisfy the creative and crafty. Incidentally, the bead shop also carries hand-crafted, recycled beads from Ghana in striped and doted designs, which owner Délia selected and brought back from Africa.

Acting on a larger scale, WASTE is a young Barcelona-based company which turns industrial car manufacturing fabric scraps into enormous beanbags, chairs and pillows. Because the company works with scraps, each pillow is different, ensuring a one-of-a-kind every time. Another interesting perk when buying a WASTE beanbag, is that car upholstery is fire-proof. This has been a selling point for the company when designing beanbags for chill-outs areas in Barcelona and Formentera bars. The company is innovative in many ways, and offers a beanbag renting service for parties and festivals. Forget the sterile folding chair! Throw a few WASTE pillows around the garden and call it a day.

From fair trade sacks to pop-cap chairs to tire-turned wallets, there are conscientious gifts galore to be bought in Barcelona.

If you are among those people who do lot’s of traveling, then looking out for an economical tickets is a requirement. In comparison to any other mode of transportation it is the air travel, which permits the passenger to reach their desired destination in a very narrow time span and also at reasonable rates. There are many travelers looking out for discount air tickets to India but have no indication as to where to look for! No doubt, when one talks about cheap airfare, travelers like to go for a good deal on airline tickets.

Travelers are inclined to look out for cheaper tickets, special offers, discount rates and refundable options. Getting an economical travel bargain is not about working hard but about working smart and planning smart. A business traveler does not mind doling out some extra cash while buying an air flight tickets to India, but for a medium class traveler it does and this is the cause why one should plan intelligent before undertaking air travel so as to avoid getting hole in your wallet.

One method of finding cheap and affordable air flight tickets is through air flight consolidators. A flight ticket consolidator in a person or an organization that buys air flight tickets in bulk or in large blocks and then resells them at a reasonably lower price. There is only one main disadvantage of buying such tickets; the flexibility for exchange diminishes and the customer service will also not be so up to expectations. But one should not forget the flight consolidators are regarded as one of the best when it comes to getting air travel.

One can also look up for online consolidator giving flight ticket quotes. Travelers should visit such online consolidator sites in order to get detailed information about cheap or discount flight rates. So one should not waste any more time and start comparing a variety of various flight rates from different consolidators and get the best rates on cheap ticket air travel.

Comparing and browsing the Internet is also a good alternative so as to get good bargains. One should check out whether the air ticket is actually discounted by comparing different air travel ticker rates online. Normally comparing and browsing is a difficult process for a few and for them the best thing to do would be to consult a travel agent. Reliable travel agents have all information about various economical airfares, discounted tickets, and special offers. A good travel agent has reach to various airlines and hence has knowledge of the special rates they offer. .

So, travel India this summer at economical rates.

Nowadays as the economy is on a high note we can see that budget shopping is not quite as such a big issue even when there are tough times. It’s a common sense that when money is not so tight neither is spending. But while it comes to low cheap airfare though it should be something that is taken as an advantage of all times. We can say that savings can be benefited in the range from 10-70%. We can spend money on several great things. In fact you could extend your holiday a day or two by saving this money.

Discussing low cheap airfare, is bit different from cheap airfare. It mean that low is the rock bottom of the cheapest. The next step after that would almost near to be free. The question is where one can find these great bargains and the problem arises who has time to go hunting after these offers. Usually whenever we plans a holiday or business trip all our spare time gets indulged with other issues.

There are a lot of superb online sites that do the work for you. They generally do all the shopping around and researching that’s necessity to find you the best price low cheap airfare available in the market at the time you need them.

Such bargains are not just restricted to those that are only going on vacation only. They are also be applicable to economy or business and yes even with first class flights also. Just imagine flying in the best style and at great rates.

Another issue with the cheap low airfare to have in mind is that flight prices change on a daily basis. So if ideally when you are ready to book your flight find the best deal for you and get it booked and make sure that this part of your responsibilities are done.

There is another misconception with first time bargain flight users that this type of deal is only good for a very few limited destinations which are not so popular or perhaps only for the off seasons. Its not like that. These great deals are available to almost each and every destination you could possibly think of and at any time of the year.

When you heard about cheap low airfare don’t realize just how readily available it is. They are under in an impression that you can only avail these sorts of rates as a rarity. But actually it is not the case at all and in fact, you can find these types of rates as always but as we said earlier you should know where to find them.

In general there are two ways to take advantage of cheap low airfare. First one is for getting the best deal for your preferred destination that you have already decided on, or you can keep yourself open to enjoy any destination that has the lowest airfare now. There is some good possibility of huge savings to make this way.

Do you have to travel by air in the coming future? If you have to, are you a pet owner who needs to bring his pet along with him? Although most of us leave our pets at home, there may be many who may not want to do so. Regardless of the reasons for wanting or needing to travel with your pet or pets, there are a number of important points that one will require to keep in mind.

The primary step in traveling with a pet is to make sure that you can do so. Even though a good number of airlines will permit pets on their planes, not all will. You may be in a mess if you plan to depart from a small airport with only one or two airlines. If they do not take in pets or if their rules and restrictions are too stringent for you to handle, you will want to scrutinize other nearby airports, especially those that are larger in size.

When traveling by air with your pet or pets, it is vital to remember that you will be charged an additional fee. Unluckily, many first time pet travelers believe that they can use their pets and their pet carriers to count towards as a carry-on bag or a checked bag. One will, almost always, be charged an extra fee for traveling with a pet. This extra fee will probably depend on the airline in question as well as on your pet’s location, such as in the cabin or in the baggage compartment.

This leads to another vital point. Even though some of the airlines allow pets, like cats and dogs, aboard their flights, they do not allow pets to be in the cabin with other passengers. This is particularly common incase of small planes where allergies may be a big factor. If one cannot part with his pet, be sure to search an airline that will allow you to keep him or her in the cabin with you. Also, remember that the size of your pet will also play a major factor in the options available.

Apart from of where your pet is stored for the plane ride, you will also need to have a pet carrier or crate for them. Many airlines have precise rules and restrictions on what type can be used. Resections generally include materials used, as well as size. Speaking of pet crates and carriers, it is vital to make sure that one gives his pet adequate room to stand and move around a little bit.

It is also vital to make sure that one gets his pet checked by their vet. One will want to make sure that his pet has all required vaccinations and also they are fit to travel. Also, all airlines require that one receive a health certificate, which will state that your pet is healthy and safe for travel.

Whether traveling by cruise, bus, bike or foot, Berlin, Germany’s largest city, has a multitude of guided tours to satisfy any traveler. From the Berlin Wall to Checkpoint Charlie, guided tours provide travelers the means to see the highlights of the city while providing captivating historical accounts.

Travel by bike for a four-hour tour of the Berlin Wall, Hitler’s Bunker, the Brandenburg Gate, and other exciting destinations, including a rest in one of Berlin’s most popular beer gardens. If biking isn’t your travel choice, perhaps a bus tour could showcase all this city has to offer. Transform from tourist to travel guide and choose one of the fifteen different landmarks at which to disembark from the bus and explore at your leisure, or remain on the bus for the full two-hour tour of the city. For a more personalized tour, travel by foot to feel the full impact of the history contained in this beautiful city. Each walking tour can be customized to meet the needs of the tourist, ranging from pub crawls to the historic Berlin walk. Choose from a variety of museums including the Altes, the Pergamon, and the Deutsch Guggenheim. After a long day of walking around the city, relax on a three-hour river cruise under the stars. See the city illuminated at night while enjoying a glass of your favorite German beverage.

Continue relaxing at one of the many hotels of Berlin. Stay at the Grand Hotel Esplanade, a five-star hotel located within a short walk of the Tiergarten Park, the Victory Column, and the Schloss Bellevue Palace. The Swissotel Berlin, another five-star accommodation, sits in the heart of the famed shopping district of the city. The underground car park can accommodate up to 150 cars, ideal for those tourists with rental cars. Enjoy the luxury of The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin, located adjacent to the Sony Center, with check-in 24-hours a day and most attractions within walking distance.

If five-star lodgings would break the budget, perhaps a three-star hotel would fit the bill. Express by Holiday Inn Berlin City Centre is located just a short distance from Potsdamer Platz Square. From Mark Hotel Meineke take a mere 6 minutes to walk to the Kurfürstendamm, Berlin’s famous shopping area, and only 10 minutes to the Zoologischer Garten train station and zoo. Utilizing the city rails, easily navigate to any destination quickly and effortlessly.

Choose a hotel near one of the many top destinations, such as Alexanderplatz, Potsdamer Platz, or Kurfürstendamm. Park Inn Berlin-Alexanderplatz offers a wonderful view of the city from the 39th floor, and is directly in the center of the historic center of Berlin. The Mandala Hotel is located strategically near the new central train station at Potsdamer Platz, and within walking distance of numerous attractions such as the Holocaust Memorial, the Philharmonie, and the Berlin Cathedral. Across from the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial church sits Hotel Boulevard Berlin, with a rooftop garden and public transport links at the doorstep. This hotel is conveniently located in the Kurfürstendamm shopping district, and conveniently near the Tegel Airport.

Regardless of the type of tour or accommodations, Berlin is a spectacular destination that should be at the top of anyone’s travel list. Whether business or pleasure, Berlin has the resources to satisfy the needs of each and every visitor.

“Special price, just for you, lady, one hundred rupees!” Are you the type who meekly says: “Oh, ok.” or the type who quickly snaps “Fifty!” This question separates the sheep from the goats in the world of open-air market bargaining. Most travelers from North America feel uncomfortable, embarrassed, or even wicked dickering over the price of a few oranges, especially when the variation in price comes out to less than you’d pay for one orange at home.

Yet a traveler is surrounded by advice and exhortations: “Don’t pay the first price they ask!” “How much did you pay for that?” “Oh, that’s too much!” “I would have gotten it for half that!” Looking for food, clothing, hotel rooms and souvenirs becomes a minefield, fraught with uncertainty and embarrassment. “Why can’t they just say what the price is?” we mutter, feeling cheated, no matter what the outcome.

Luckily, there are few basic rules you can master, which won’t make you into a wizard bargainer (that takes practice) and won’t make you love the wild, give-and-take atmosphere of the bazaar (that’s a matter of personality and culture) but will help you get what you need and want with self-esteem and sanity intact.

First of all, remember there is no “right price”. Lulled by printed price tags, most Americans think of “price” as some kind of a formal standard, established by the “market”, which is not a collection of stalls owned by competing sellers, but rather some abstraction that objectively governs their economic life. Thrown into a real market, the original reality from which the metaphor was coined, Americans feel at sea, buffeted by demands to conform to unclear rules.

The price is what you are willing to pay, and what they are willing to sell for. If you want something, first you have to decide how much you are willing to pay for it, then you have to discover if someone is willing to sell it for that amount. Further dickering for ever lower rates is up to you.

Second, it has no further significance after it’s done. Don’t carry around the worry that you paid too much, or too little, or whatever. So many times, people let their whole vacation be spoiled because of one transaction they felt uncomfortable about. Let it go. Don’t let people dissect your bargaining process and tell you where you went wrong (unless you really want to get advice for future learning). If you got what you wanted without breaking your own bank, then the price was right.

Third, bragging about your bargaining exploits to your friends is part of the whole routine. In this phase, truth is not the main focus. Even if you don’t blatantly make up the ever cheaper prices you paid, you don’t have to confess to the feeling of being a blundering amateur that you were hiding.

So go out and look around. Ignore the people touting stuff you don’t want and fearlessly ogle the items you plan to buy. Then see how low the price will go. Whenever you get tired, you can just pay the last price named and go on your way. Some people call it a game, but you may prefer to think of it as a civilized business deal, carried out in a new way. Just don’t think of it as a fight. As long as you end up buying the stuff you wanted, everybody’s a winner.

No family camping trip is complete without the practice of some popular camping traditions. Singing songs around the campfire, setting up tents, etc. are all camping traditions that are deeply-rooted in history. Make your next camping vacation one to remember by incorporating these fun camping traditions into your stay.

1. Setting up Tents

Staying in tents is not only an economical way to camp out – tents are a traditional dwelling that Native Americans used long before Europeans arrived. The tents that Native Americans used were known as Tipis. Tipi is a Sioux word for “dwelling.” The shape of Tipis allowed them to shed wind and rain. Nowadays, tents are far more compact and easier to carry around. The nights you and your family spend camped out in a tent while listening to the sounds of the night and going outside to admire the star-studded sky will become lasting memories.

2. Campfire Songs

Campfire songs are an oral tradition that cannot be traced back to a particular culture or time in history. Singing around the fire is a common practice across many different cultures and popular campfire songs have a variety of origins. The popular campfire song, “Home on the Range,” is Kansas’ state song while “Blow the Man Down” is a traditional sailor song from the 19th century. Some campfire songs even have spiritual significance. Both children and adults love to belt it out in front of a campfire. Bring a guitar, hand drums, and/or tambourines to make singing around the fire with your family even more fun. Only the crickets will hear you so it doesn’t matter if you don’t exactly qualify as a good singer, let loose and enjoy singing around the fire on your next camping trip.

3. Campfire Storytelling

While packing your tent, food, and everything else you need for your family camping trip, don’t forget to stock up on great campfire stories! Storytelling is a tradition in every culture of the world. Native Americans have been telling stories for thousands of years in North America. Telling stories around the campfire with your family will bring you closer together. Let your imagination run wild and make up your own stories or consult a great storybook and pick out the best stories you can find.

4. Making S’Mores

No one knows exactly where everyone’s favorite campfire treat originated but there was a recipe for a similar treat in the 1940 Girl Scout Handbook that was called “Some Mores.” Everyone in the family can enjoy this delicious sandwich cookie that consists of fire-roasted marshmallow, melted chocolate, and graham crackers.

5. Campfire Cooking

Whether you’re going to cook with a charcoal grill, dutch oven, campfire, or camping stove, making and sharing food with your family is a lovely tradition that shouldn’t be left out of any camping trip. Cultures around the world have different methods of outdoor cooking and in North America the Scouting movement and wilderness educators are excellent sources of information on the subject.

The Netherlands is affectionately known as ‘the land of museums’ and Amsterdam alone has over 42 museums displaying a vast array of history and artefacts. Visitors interested in art, sex, erotica, hash, torture, maritime transport, diamonds, religion, the holocaust, beverages, flora and fauna, theatre, archaeology, science and technology are all well catered for.

The most touching, true story and personal account is that of Anne Frank’s house located at Prinsengracht opposite 296. Anne Frank was a 14-year-old Jewish girl growing up during the Second World War. The house, now a museum open to the public, is a reminder of what happened to so many Jewish families during the holocaust. Visitors are able to walk through the house and even climb up to the secret annexe where Anne and her family hid for so long from the Nazi’s prior to their capture. During that time Anne kept a diary which a family friend later had published, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. For more information about living in Amsterdam during the years of German occupation, An Interrupted Life by Etty Hillesum is about a young Jewish woman living in Amsterdam prior to her death at Auschwitz. More information about the Jews and their history may be found at the Jewish Museum (Joods Historisch Museum) at Jonas Daniel Meijerplein 2-4.

Other more shocking but on some accounts, humorous, artefacts may be found in the Torture Museum, located near Muntplein on the left bank of the Singel canal. It is a small but confronting documentary of human cruelty displaying instruments used on prisoners throughout the medieval times for crimes we would today regard as petty.

The Tulip Museum also on Prinsengracht (112) just over the bridge from Anne Frank’s house may offer solace after appreciating such terror as that experienced by Jewish families during the holocaust and medieval prisoners. The tulip is the floral symbol of the Netherlands and the museum presents the history of the cultivation of the tulip including the tulip mania of the 17th century.

On a lighter note, the Sex Museum – Temple of Venus is located just in front of Centraal Station on the way to Dam Square consists of a rich collection of art, photography, sculptures, plates and other wares displaying the beauty of human sexuality. Once in the mood, the Erotic Museum in the heart of the Red Light district is sure to provide pleasure if not a good laugh. It displays a series of John Lennon’s lithographs, erotic photography, and an adult version of ‘Snow White and Seven Dwarfs’ is projected in a separate room. There is even a vending machine holding the most unusual condoms for sale for those who wish to purchase in public!

The Hash, Hemp and Marijuana Museum at Oudezijgs Achterburgwal 148, presents convincing displays about the various constructive uses of hemp such as fuel, clothes and paper. According to the museum, one hectare of cannabis plants can make the same amount of paper as four hectares of forest. The hemp seed also produces oil which is good for many things including human health. Once upon a time it was illegal not to grow a plant of cannabis for the government and it is only due to international pressure that it is officially illegal in Amsterdam.

If the controversy proves too much or information overflow builds up a thirst, the Vodka Museum at Damrack 33 in front of Centraal Station features the history of Russian Vodka. There is an amazing collection of old vodka bottles in timeline order in addition to a wide selection of vodka from all around the world for sale in shots on the spot at the elegant Museum bar.

A bigger thirst may send visitors to the Heineken Brewery further out at 78 Stadhouderskade. Brewery tours are held each weekday in the morning for a donation which is given to several different charities. Amsterdam’s brewery was Heineken’s first, opened in 1864, and the tour guides visitors through the whole brewery process including the old brewing facilities and a beer museum. Cold beers are served in a large drinking hall overlooking the city at the end of the tour.

After a short break in the many coffee shops all over Amsterdam, art lovers should never miss the opportunity to view Vincent Van Gogh’s Museum at Paulus Potterstraat 7, which is home to the world’s largest collection of the most important Dutch artist of the 19th century in chronological order. Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art is close by on Paulus Potterstraat 13. Other art museums include Rembrandthuis Museum on Jodenbreestraat 4-6 and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam’s largest at Stadhouderskade 42.

These are just some of Amsterdam’s museums but of all, the Amsterdam Historisch Museum at 92 Kalverstraat is the best designed. The former orphanage exhibits 700 years of the city’s history with a focus around the Golden Age of Amsterdam in the 17th century. It was during this time that the city flourished as the richest city in the world. Some of the exhibits even included actual traded goods which contributed to its success of the time.

With the skyrocketing prices of gas and food, many families simply cannot afford to hop on a plane and head to an exotic locale for their yearly family vacation anymore. However, don’t let the economic downturn ruin your plans to have a family vacation this year. One of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to have a family vacation on a budget is to go camping.

There are a variety of campgrounds across the US so you don’t have to go very far to enjoy a unique camping adventure. Because you won’t have to travel a long way, you will save on gas and thus help to preserve our environment. For an eco-friendly vacation that is equally friendly on your pocket book, go camping for your next family vacation. Whether you want to head to a campground in an RV, stay in a cabin, or pitch a tent, there are numerous activities you and your family can enjoy in the wild.

Activities Families Can Enjoy on a Camping Trip

When you go camping there are activities appropriate for family members of all ages. Some common activities associated with camping include: golfing, hunting, fishing, canoeing, swimming, kayaking, biking, river rafting, hiking, caving, and bathing in hot springs. Many campgrounds also have activities especially for children. Whether you want to relax and read a book by the waterside or enjoy adventurous activities and get some exercise, you’ll find plenty of activities to keep you entertained on a camping trip. Also, don’t forget the classic camping activities such as telling stories around the campfire and making s’mores.

Accommodation Options

If you’d like to enjoy the conveniences you have back at home on your camping trip, consider renting a cabin or traveling in an RV. Approximately seven million Americans now own RVs, making them a popular vacation option. Camping out in an RV or staying in a cabin is certainly a more comfortable option but if you are on a tight budget, consider pitching a tent. All you need to go tent camping are tents, sleeping bags, and other basic supplies.

If you have never been tent camping and you have young children, consider trying it out for a night in your own backyard first to get everyone used to it.

Food on a Camping Trip

When you go camping, one of the areas you save the most money in is food. You typically won’t spend any more money than you would if you stayed at home. If you have an RV you can prepare all of your food in its kitchenette but if you are traveling by car, you may need to take a camping stove and other supplies with you, depending on what facilities are available at your campground. It’s a good idea to take all of the food you think you’ll need so you don’t have to spend your vacation at the super market. Plus there may not be much available near your campground.

In conclusion, it’s possible to have a fun-filled family vacation without breaking the bank. There’s no need to travel halfway across the world to give your family a vacation to remember when you can take a local camping trip and have a blast.
