On August 27, 1993, I walked into the Walgreen&#8217;s pharmacy at California Pacific Medical Center and handed the pharmacist my prescription. I&#8217;d just begun therapy for severe clinical depression, and my physician at the hospital&#8217;s outpatient Psychiatric Clinic believed I was a promising candidate for anti-depressants.</p>
<p>Even in the state I was in—deep despair—I knew I was crossing a line I couldn&#8217;t uncross. I was admitting to the world and to my insurance company that I had a &#8220;mental illness&#8221;. I was about to take a psychiatric drug. These were two things I had avoided for almost 40 years, but now I had reached the end of my ability to function. So after years of recurring episodes of depression—each time more severe&#8211; thwarted ambitions and sabotaged relationships, self-help books by the dozen, macrobiotics, EST, flower essences, chanting, meditation, prayer, herbs and positive thinking, it had come to this moment in a drug store. The pharmacist was counting out the 30 green and white capsules that Dr. Bhakta believed would be my ticket back to the land of the functioning.</p>
<p>When she told me that she thought Prozac would be the best choice of drug for me, I was a bit disappointed. Prozac, the happy pill. Prozac, the punchline of so many jokes. Prozac, the drug for the ordinary depressed person. I was hoping she&#8217;d recommend a more obscure drug, but Prozac was it.<br />
I carried the little amber bottle down the hill to my studio apartment in the Marina, and set it carefully down on the counter. It was early afternoon, and I&#8217;d been instructed to begin taking the capsules the next morning. Tomorrow, I hoped my life would start again.</p>
<p>Prozac, and its sister drugs Paxil and Zoloft [all SSRI's—Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors], work very slowly. They usually take from five to six weeks to begin working. I knew this, and knew that the next morning&#8217;s dosage might be the first of many. It was the first of thousands. For the past 3,650 days, my morning routine has included an anti-depressant. I&#8217;ve taken a couple of &#8220;drug holidays&#8221; in that time [the euphemistic phrase doctors use for taking a medication break], but it was clear I was one of the patients for whom such holidays were contraindicated.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve tried other drugs. Prozac has its side effects, so I switched to Paxil for a while. That didn&#8217;t work, so I tried Wellbutrin, and that worked OK for a couple of years. But nothing has worked as well as Prozac, and a couple of years ago, I resumed taking it. By then it was off patent and available by its generic name of fluoxetine. Some of the tabs weren&#8217;t even green and white, but I still call it Prozac.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a stigma attached to psychiatric drugs. Taking them isn&#8217;t necessarily something you&#8217;d boast about; I&#8217;ve never been ashamed or kept it a secret. The PC thing is to say it&#8217;s no different than having to take a thyroid pill or a shot of insulin or a beta-blocker every morning. After all, clinical depression is a medical condition that is treated by medication.</p>
<p>True, and yet no one has to justify insulin or receive unsolicited advice about cheering up or improving one&#8217;s attitude in lieu of thyroid medication. There&#8217;s also the misguided belief that psychiatric drugs are somehow &#8220;happy&#8221; pills and make every day a walk in the park.</p>
<p>Nothing could be further from the truth. What they do—when they work [and they work in about 75 per cent of patients]&#8211; is bring to you back to normal or average. In some ways, it&#8217;s utterly prosaic. In other ways, the ways I appreciate most, it&#8217;s a small miracle. For me, and for millions of other depressed folks around the world, it&#8217;s changed our lives for the better.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s easy and fashionable to bash &#8220;big pharma&#8221; and mistrust the motives of giant drug companies. But for some people—and I am one of them—the only thing that works for the disease of depression is a psychiatric drug. I wish it wasn&#8217;t so. If I could treat my depression by drinking bancha twig tea or eating seitan or reading Dr. Phil, that would be nice. But I can&#8217;t.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sue is a friend of mine whose life is a whirlwind of activity. She works full-time, takes classes at night, and volunteers at a soup kitchen. In her “spare time” she tends to her house and even cuts her elder neighbor’s lawn.<br />
I called Sue recently. It was a Saturday night, around 8PM. She could barely talk to me, yawning every 5 minutes. Finally, she begged me to let her go to sleep.<br />
“But it’s Saturday!” I exclaimed. “I thought you’d be interested in going out with us.” Our other friends had gathered at my house for a night of drinks and dancing.<br />
“Sorry,” Sue replied sheepishly. “You young folks will have to go on without me.”<br />
More and more, women these days are in a state of perpetual “busyness”. They go to work, take care of their children and/or aging parents, volunteer, manage a side business, and help out friends and family. This is in addition to them doing housework and home maintenance.<br />
There’s nothing wrong with being busy, of course. Staying active is essential for physical, mental, and spiritual health. However, certain types of busyness can lead to exhaustion, stress, and even sickness.<br />
There are three basic types of busyness: daily, sporadic, and chronic. Daily busyness involves taking care of basic tasks without hurry or stress. The work can be challenging yet invigorating, leaving us with a sense of accomplishment.<br />
Sporadic busyness involves situations like deadline projects, crises, or starting a new career. We are more stressed than usual due to the higher demands of this busyness, but we know it is only temporary and will not last forever.<br />
Chronic busyness, however, involves busyness to the point where you feel that your schedule, not you, is controlling your life. This type of busyness has a high level of intensity and there is no hope that it will ever be over. It is also the type of busyness that eats away at time that could be spent on activities like eating right, exercising, and sleeping.<br />
Women are especially prone to chronic busyness because society has always looked upon us as the caregivers and the pillars of community life. Thus, we are more likely than men to volunteer our time for a charity, to help a friend move, or to sit in on a PTA meeting. More often than not, we will try to squeeze in “just one more thing”, feeling guilty if we cannot offer our services. Sometimes our motivation is our drive for perfection or our desire to appear all-capable. Other times we feel that to refuse is to show weakness. Some women are motivated by low-self-esteem, assuming that if they do more, they will be more useful and loved.<br />
Unfortunately, by being chronically busy, we often end up neglecting ourselves and (ironically) others. Instead of filling an hour or two in our lives with meditation, exercise, or a walk to the park, we substitute it with soccer practice for the kids or making brownies for a Girl Scout meeting. If we are married, our spouses become our unwitting accomplices, running errands for us when instead they could be snuggling up with us on the couch. When intimacy with your spouse becomes the time you both spent updating the electrical outlets, that marriage will soon be headed for trouble. Thus, chronic busyness robs us of our much needed “me” and “us” time, the time that is required for personal and relationship recharge.<br />
Our relationships with friends and family can also suffer. When we are always busy doing too many things, we become exhausted. As a result, we are not very good company for our parents, siblings, and friends.<br />
Busyness can often lead to a personal downward emotional spiral, with us switching between feelings of pride and rage. We feel pride when we perform a certain task because we assume that “no one else does it as well as I do.” Then, when we become overwhelmed by our tasks, we lash out, asking “why won’t someone help me?” In severe cases, women become overwhelmed to the point of intense guilt, anxiety, and depression. Some women may even suffer a mental breakdown.<br />
The solution to this is very simple: we must learn to say no.  Rather than agreeing to do everything that is asked of us, we must evaluate whether these tasks can be reassigned to someone else, put off, or rejected outright. For example, it is one thing to bake a few brownies for your daughter’s Girl Scout meeting; however, you shouldn’t be expected to bake the brownies, pick up the girls, sit through the meeting, and clean up too.<br />
If you work outside the home, think about how much your employer compensates you for your time. In essence, employers equilibrate time with money. Now, think about that friend or neighbor who has asked for a chunk of your time in order to do a particular task. That time, had you spent it doing paid work, would have equaled a good amount of money! For all practical purposes, your friend or neighbor has asked for your money!<br />
This is not to say that volunteer work is bad or that we shouldn’t help out friends and neighbors in need. We just have to realize that our time and efforts are not free. There is always a cost when we agree to perform a particular task, whether that cost is to our personal time, our marriages, or other family relationships. If nothing else, that is time that could be spent finding out whether we are happy with our lives. It could be time spent setting new personal goals and getting in touch with our souls.<br />
Once you have set aside time for yourself, you will better know who you are and what you want to be. Then, saying no to excessive tasks will become easier. Your own life goals will be first in your heart, not the pleasing of others. In this way, you will gain sanity, peace, and true happiness.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Living in a time where life expectancy has now reached into the late 80’s you would think more people would feel that they had time to waste. Mankind is still looking for ways to extend and prolong the longevity of their time on this Earth.</p>
<p>Many studies have been done in the past, creams created, miracle drinks, diets, all in an effort help prolong life. Millions of hours and dollars have been invested in lengthening human life. Well there may have been a simple answer in front of us all along; positive thinking and attitude.</p>
<p>It may sound like a bunch of hooey to many, but recent studies support this theory. Clinical studies performed by the Mayo Clinic in the United States have provided statistical data and solid proof that optimists (people with positive attitudes and thinking patterns) outlive pessimists (those who have a negative outlook).</p>
<p>The Mayo Clinic performed the study over a five year period and monitored a large cross section of different people in various states such as Arizona, Florida, and Minnesota.</p>
<p>What the test found was that positive thinkers enjoyed such health benefits as:<br />
Decreased stress<br />
Greater resistance to colds and viral infections<br />
An increased overall sense of well being and good health<br />
Reduced risk of heart disease<br />
Improved breathing<br />

<p>It is still a mystery to researchers as to why a more positive outlook on life has a positive effect on a persons overall well being and longevity.</p>
<p>Some experts believe that serotonin, a chemical released from the brain when a person experiences happiness, may reduce the effects of aging and boost the immune system. Another theory accepted by many doctors is that physical and mental stress impacts the body leading to weaker organs, which may become health problems with age. <p>Before you start thinking negatively about your ability to change into a positive thinker, experts say it is relatively easy to become a positive thinker. Some of the health effects can even be immediate.</p>

<li>Instead of thinking “I never have enough time” list and re-evaluate your priorities and focus only on the few that are immediately most important to you.</li>
<li>Above all try, and if you are unable to meet goals understand that it is not the end of the world.</li>
</ol>
<p>These are just a few tips on how you can begin to think positively. You won’t become an optimist over night, but the time it takes will likely be well worth the effort in improved health and longer life expectancy.</p>
