The Family Stone (Download, Review)

The Family StoneThe Family Stone is one of those movies that I thought I would hate, but actually ended up liking a lot. I’m usually not too keen on this style of wacky family oriented comedy, but this film does it in a really entertaining way, and there is more than just the normal two dimensional humor going on here. The Family Stone follows the lives of an eccentric family at Christmas. When Everett (Dermot Mulroney), the eldest child of the family, brings home his up tight and obnoxious girlfriend Meredith (Sarah Jessica Parker) with him to the seasonal festivities and declares that the two are going to be wed, the family set out to change both his and her mind, by any means possible.

Feeling the obvious hostility, Meredith calls her sister Julie (Claire Danes), to come over and help her ward off the family, but her plan backfires as Julie has more in common with the family than she does with her sister. Eventually Meredith begins to realize that the family actually is right, and a game of opposites attract begins to ensue, but I’m not saying who ends up with who.

Let’s just say that it is rather unexpected.

While this is a funny film, what is really cool about it is the depth of character expressed in it. At first everyone seems very one sided and cookie cutter, but then as the movie evolves, the characters begin to unravel and show various different sides of themselves. Though at first some of the people seemed very obnoxious or mean, eventually you realize that they are all actually really good people, and it is this dynamic to the characters that prevents the film from being another typical wacky family film and gives it that depth usually only found in drama films.

What starts off as a silly comedy becomes a very heartwarming and emotional picture at the end, and this really catches you off guard. If you have any preconceptions about this film, throw them away now. I guarantee once you watch the film, you’ll love it. Highly recommended for sure.
