The Chronicles of Narnia (Download, Review)

The Chronicles of NarniaWhen I first heard that Disney would be the company adapting the Chronicles of Narnia for the big screen, I was somewhat apprehensive.  Unlike some smaller studios, Disney has not always been known for understanding subtlety and nuance, two things the Narnia series contain in abundance. I was somewhat relieved, however, when I found that Andrew Adamson was the director behind the scenes.  As the person responsible for bringing Shrek to life, Adamson certainly revealed a level of humor and humanity that could be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

And when I finally got to see the beloved books of my youth brought to life I was pleasantly surprised by the wondrous tapestry that Disney had managed to create.  The world of Narnia is a fully realized one, and it is a beautiful landscape indeed.  Using a brilliant combination of live action and animation, Adamson has created a world populated by such wondrous creatures as unicorns, fauns and even talking beavers.

The message of courage, family and redemption that made the books written by C.S. Lewis so special come through loud and clear in this version of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and the character of Aslan has been faithfully brought to the screen.  The humanity of Aslan, and the depth of his sacrifice, is all the more amazing when you consider that this wondrous lion is a product of computer animation.

Since the Narnia books first made their appearance, many have seen them as a Christian allegory, and there is no doubt that Mr. Lewis intended Aslan as a Jesus figure.  In fact, C.S. Lewis long resisted an animated version of the books, feeling that a cartoon approach would be akin to blasphemy.

The Christian nature of the story is certainly on full display, but what makes the movie so special is that the story is a universal one, not restricted to any one religion or worldview.  It was this same universality that made the books so beloved, and the folks at Disney have managed to bring this magic to the big screen.

Like the other recent Christian allegory, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe works so well because it first and foremost tells a great story.  While the story of courage, redemption and morality is an important one, it is the excitement of the story that carries it forward and makes us care so deeply about the characters.
