Jamie Lee Curtis and Tim Allen play Nora and Luther Krank. The couple lives in a suburb of Chicago and are suffering “empty nest” syndrome because their only daughter, Blair, played by Julie Gonzalo is going to be in Peru with the Peace Corp for Christmas. Luther suggests to his wife that they take a Caribbean cruise for the holiday and spend $3,000, instead of the usual $6,000 that they spend decorating and lighting the exterior of their home for the holidays. Nora agrees and the cruise is booked.

Each year the people on the Krank’s block compete to see who will have the biggest and best Christmas display. When their neighbors discover that the Kranks aren’t going to be home to take part in the traditional competition, they become very upset. They band together to protest the Krank’s holiday away from the neighborhood. The leader of the group is Vic Frohmeyer, played by Dan Aykroyd. He leads the neighbors in a delegation to berate the Kranks because they dare break community tradition. They form a picket line on the Krank’s front lawn and take up a chant, “Free Frosty, Free Frosty!” They don’t like the fact that their will be no traditional snowman on the Krank’s roof and that the Kranks won’t be holding their annual Christmas Eve party.

The local newspaper gets wind of the unrest in the neighborhood and writes a story about the Kranks and how they are the only house on the block that is holding Frosty the Snowman prisoner in their basement while they traipse off to the Caribbean. The Kranks are pressured from every angle to give up their Caribbean cruise and stay home for the holidays.

Then daughter, Blair, who has only been out of the country for two weeks, decides she is coming home for Christmas and bringing her new Peruvian boyfriend with her. The Kranks feel they have no choice but to stay home and celebrate Christmas in the traditional way.

All of the neighbors are delighted that the Kranks will be home for Christmas and pitch in to decorate, prepare food and put up the tree so the Kranks will be able to put on their traditional Christmas Eve party; all of this because one couple decided to go against neighborhood tradition and celebrate the holidays in their own way.

There are a few things lacking in the film. The first is humor. The second is holiday cheer. The third is any sign that Christmas is a religious holiday that pays tribute to the Jesus’ birth. Not that the film needed to be religious to be good, but a mention of where it originated would have been nice.

To top it all off, the Kranks, who in my eyes are a very sensible couple, are made to look like non-conformists just because they wanted to celebrate the holiday in a different way this year. We are supposed to see them as the villains in the film when the actions of their neighbors are the most ludicrous thing I’ve ever seen.

Christmas With the Kranks is not about celebrating Christmas with family and friends; it’s not about love and laughter or being home for the holidays. It’s about shopping and commercialism.

If you’re looking for a great Christmas movie with some holiday magic, Christmas With the Kranks doesn’t make the grade. It’s a film that missed the boat. Think twice before purchasing it for your holiday collection.
