King Kong Movie (Download, Review)

king kongKing Kong is the movie that got a young Peter Jackson interested in films and filmmaking, and his version of King Kong is truly an instant classic.  Jackson has brought the same attention to detail and development of character to King Kong as he did with his wildly successful Lord of the Rings trilogy. Like those earlier films, this version of King Kong requires no small commitment of time.  While the original King Kong clocked in at only 100 minutes, this remake takes more than three hours to tell its story.  Not a minute of this time is wasted, however, and the entire movie is both a lot of fun and surprisingly poignant.

Jackson’s version of Kong begins with a vivid picture of Manhattan in the grips of the Great Depression, including the ever present soup lines and hordes of workers lining up to work on the new skyscrapers that would come to dominate the New York City skyline.  King Kong himself does not make an appearance until nearly an hour has passed.

The patience of the audience is well rewarded, however, as the first sight of the giant ape is truly breathtaking.  The writers, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Phillippa Boyens, have taken their task very seriously, and there is not a sign of the camp that characterized the Dino DeLaurentis remake.

Fay Wray’s shoes are notoriously difficult ones to fill, but Naomi Watts does a remarkable job at recreating this beloved character.  In Jackson’s version, Naomi’s character is a down and out dancer by the name of Ann Darrow, and she accompanies her director, Adrian Brody (played with remarkable style by Jack Black) to the infamous Skull Island.

Once the characters arrive on Skull Island, the action begins in earnest, and continues nonstop for the rest of the film.  The first sight of Skull Island is incredibly effective, with rocky outcroppings in the shape of giant ape heads and an enormous storm strewn landscape.

The action on Skull Island and throughout the rest of the film is remarkable, as is the relationship between Ann Darrow and the giant ape.  The relationship of ape and human is surprisingly tender and romantic, and it provided one of the most pleasant surprises of the film.

The climactic closing of the film in New York City provides a wonderful tribute to the original, while providing special effects and visual elements that were simply not possible when the original was filmed.

Many people have wondered if the world really needed another King Kong remake.  Based on the experience of this reviewer, the answer is an emphatic yes.
