Grotto: an Italian Version Gazebo Structure
What is the Italian garden art which seems like ancient time creation? Yes, it is definitely grotto. A “Grotto” or in Italian name is “Grotta” is any type of natural or artificial cave structure that is associated with modern, historic or prehistoric use by humans. For some people, it is used for some purposes depends on the people need and taste.
When it is not an artificial garden feature, a grotto is often a small cave near water and often flooded or liable to flood at high tide. It is reflecting the process of erosion which carves out the cave from the shoreline slowly.
Artificial grottoes are also used as garden features for many people home. A grotto may be utilized to display statues and other works of art, or it may be a feature of a waterfall of arrangement of plantings like the Italian do. Some garden grottoes are closer to buildings than caves that it is more modern to enjoy. That makes grotto is somewhat similar to gazebo.
Gazebo is outdoor garden decoration to beautify the backyard instead of only flowers and plantations. An outdoor gazebo is normally a free standing structure. It is covered with a roof with shape of a cupola and its walls are open from all sides. Gazebos are small and simple structures. Although similar but grotto still retain its function which tends to be a religious garden for the homeowner. Some statues of important figure and other works of art in ones religion usually put in the cave.
