Those booking cheap flights to Delhi may be interested to learn of a new initiative to be introduced by authorities in the city ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Games.

Mangat Ram Singhal, the social welfare minister, announced that, in a bid to make Delhi’s streets more welcoming to visitors, the capital city is cracking down on those caught begging, reports the Times of India.

Two new mobile courts have been launched to assist with this drive and those who see people begging can report to the unit. It will then travel to the spot in question and find those asking locals and holidaymakers for money.

Mr Singhal is quoted by the news provider as saying: “The nature of punishment depends on the old records of the beggar. If he or she is found to have been forced into beggary, then they would be given only counselling sessions.”

The Commonwealth Games, which could provide a great excuse to book a cheap flight to Delhi, opens in October next year.
