The New York Bestselling book, Wings, written by debut author Aprilynne Pike is to be turned into a Disney movie with Miley Cyrus in the lead role. The book was only released in May 2009 and the movie deal was signed just two months later. Many people have drawn similarities between the Wings book and the bestselling Twilight series and think that Disney is buying the rights to this book to create its own Twilight franchise.

What is certain, is that Disney is putting all of its weight behind this movie. They bought it very fast and have put their number one star behind the movie, Miley Cyrus. Miley is filming right now for her latest movie, ‘The Last Song’, a film adaptation of another book by Nicholas Sparks. The book is only the first of a four-part series so Miley would be tied to this project for quite a few movies.

The book is about a young girl called Laurel who wakes one morning to find that she has Wings. It is very much a coming of age book and is not quite as graphic as Twilight, with no references to violence or sex. The dialogue is really what has made the book so popular. Pike has an excellent ability to drive the plot with some great exchanges between the characters. The book is due to be translated into a number of languages and is surely going to be a huge success, but will the movie franchise pay off for Disney and Miley?
