FENTANYL (Duragesic)

Appearance:

Transdermal/Skin Patches: Rectangular transparent patch with protective liner and 4 different layers. Available as 25, 50, 75,& 100 mcg/hr patches.

Why this Medication is Used:

This medication is a narcotic analgesic (pain reliever). Fentanyl patches provide
slow, constant release of the medication, for steady relief of your pain.

How do you take this Medication:

• Your doctor may order one or more patches to be used at the same time. Fentanyl patches should be applied to a flat, hairless area of skin, away from your elbows, wrists and knees. The patch(s) will be replaced every 3 days. It is not necessary to place the patch(s) over the area of pain. If you need to remove hair from an area to apply a patch, clip the hairs but do not shave them.

• Each patch is sealed in its own protective pouch. DO NOT remove a patch until you are ready to use it. Remove the liner and discard it. Try NOT to touch the sticky side before applying the patch to a dry, non-hairy area of your arm, chest or back. Press the patch firmly to your skin for 10-20 seconds. Make sure the edges are stuck to the skin.

• Wash your hands immediately after the application. Do not use soap or any other cleaning solution on your hands at this time. (It is OK to use soap at other times). Choose a different place to apply the next patch(es).

• The first patch can take up to 24 hours to give pain relief. Your doctor may tell you to take other pain relieving drugs until you receive full benefit from Fentanyl.

• It is important to let your doctor know if you are having any breakthrough pain (eg. periods of extra pain, above the usual level). You may have to take a different, short-acting pain-relieving medication as well as the Fentanyl patch.

• You can swim, shower or bathe with the patch in place. If it falls off apply a new patch to a different area of dry skin.
