What is an Abscessed Tooth?

An abscessed tooth can cause severe pain and sleepless nights. I’ve had abscessed teeth before and let me tell you that the throbbing pain can make your whole head and face ache to the point where it seems there is no relief in sight. So what exactly is an abscessed tooth?

An abscessed tooth is a painful infection usually caused by tooth decay although it can also be caused by trauma to a tooth or the face. Left untreated the infection may spread to the supporting bone.

What are the symptoms of an abscessed tooth?

It is important to realize that there may not always be symptoms present at least in the early stage of infection. Symptoms may appear as the infection progresses. Symptoms of an abscessed tooth may include the following.

Swelling
Throbbing pain
Sensitivity to hot or cold
Swollen glands

If you suspect you have an abscessed tooth you should see your dentist as soon as possible. Once your dentist has determined that you have an abscessed tooth he or she will proceed with the best possible course of treatment. The usual course of action is to prescribe an antibiotic to fight the infection. Your dentist may also prescribe a pain medication. Further treatment depends upon several factors including the severity of the infection, the condition of the tooth and surrounding tissue. A root canal may be done to accomplish this or your dentist may make an incision in the gum to drain the abscess. It is also possible that the affected tooth may need to be extracted. Your dentist will discuss the options with you at the time of your visit.

An abscessed tooth can be quite painful and cause a great deal of discomfort. Since the most common cause of an abscessed tooth is tooth decay it is important to take steps to prevent decay from occurring by using proper oral hygiene. Try to avoid foods and beverages that contain excess amounts of sugar and always be sure to brush your teeth after eating since food fragments may lodge between teeth causing decay. It is very important to brush your teeth before going to bed to remove all traces of sugar or other substances that may cause tooth decay. Drinking plenty of water can also help prevent decay. Even if you are not suffering from any tooth pain or discomfort regular dental checkups are imperative to retaining good dental health. Be sure to keep regular dental exams for the future health of your teeth.
