Underfloor Heating Screeds

The choice of screed for underfloor heating will be dependent on:

How large is the area?
An area of over 80m2 would usually justify the choice of a liquid screed in preference to a traditional semi-dry mix.

The type of underfloor heating installed.
Some underfloor heating systems (low height systems such as Schluter Bekotec or MAX4Therm) cannot be used with a traditional screed and a liquid screed must be specified with these regardless of the area.

What is access like?
If access is poor and restricted then the risk of damage to the system, by traditional screed being barrowed over the underfloor heating, is increased.
Under these circumstances a pumped liquid is preferred, as the risk of damage is minimal.

Wherever possible a liquid screed should be used with a wet underfloor heating system, that is one using underfloor heating pipe loops rather than electric underfloor heating elements, for the following reasons.

A liquid screed completely envelops the pipe loops and provides maximum surface contact to ensure even heat transfer into the screed. Compared to a traditional screed where an inverted v is formed around each pipe loop and this forms an air pocket which acts as an insulator between the pipe and the floor screed.

The conductivity of a liquid screed is greater than that of a traditional semi-dry by up to 30% according to research done by the University of East Anglia.

Foot traffic over the pipe loops carrying a 50mm pipe puts minimal pressure on the underfloor heating pipe and its retaining structure compared to pushing barrows full of screed over them.
