Most people are a bit apprehensive when you use the word “surgery” with them, however, today there are more and more techniques that are becoming much safer for the patients. One of these is laser surgery for snoring. Many who have undergone this have found that it helps tremendously with their chronic snoring and enables them to finally get a good night’s sleep. But what is involved in this laser surgery for snoring, and what are some drawbacks?

A typical surgical procedure for snoring is called uvulopalatopharngoplasty, or by its much easier initials, UPPP. This type of procedures reshapes the uvula and soft palate in the back of the mouth and removes excess tissue in that area and the throat. However, a new technique or laser surgery for snoring is called laser-assisted uvuloplatoplasty, or LAUP, which essentially does the same thing but without a scalpel. This technique usues lasers to cut away excess tissue, and sometimes the tonsils and adenoids.

The reason that most opt for the laser surgery for snoring is because there is much less bleeding, risk of infection, and recovery time. Often a person can return to work and their normal activities the next day.

Another procedures that is very similar to a laser surgery for snoring is called somnoplasty, which removes or shrinks excess tissue via low levels of radiofrequency. The one drawback of somnoplasty versus LAUP is that while there is minimal pain and bleeding during this procedure as well, a person does often need to return for additional sessions and treatments.

Side effects experienced after laser surgery for snoring are usually minimal, and most patients report that they are very happy with the procedure. However, you do need to find a doctor that is well-skilled in this type of procedure, as these methods are somewhat new and not typically performed by just a general M.D.
