5 Tips to Younger Looking Skin
We are a nation obsessed with looking younger. Billions of dollars are spent annually in our effort to regain a youthful appearance. We try wrinkle eliminators, anti-aging creams, moisturizers, even surgery all in our attempt to be the signs of aging. While some of the products may prove to be money well spent, there are a few easy and cheaper steps you can take to maintain healthy, younger looking skin.
1. Wear sunscreen.
Sunscreen is an absolute must, and should be applied as part of your daily routine. Many moisturizers and even foundations have a UV protector added to the bottle. These are a great purchase, as the UV screen is already in the product you use, saving you time and money. Look for a UV shield of at least 15 for your face.
Even if you are not planning on spending the day at the beach, sunscreen should still be applied. We are exposed to harmful UV rays while mowing the lawn, gardening, even walking through the mall parking lot. Don’t underestimate the damage the sun can do in a small amount of time.
2. Moisturize.
Dry skin tends to pull, creating tension and wrinkles before their time. Moisturizers put moisture back into the skin cells and soften the look of wrinkles and the feel of your skin. No matter what your skin type, it is essential that you moisturize morning and night. Find the right product for your skin type, and make sure that it can be used underneath makeup. Apply as a foundation for your foundation. Apply to a freshly washed face before going to bed. Don’t neglect your body parts too. Be sure to moisturize your arms, legs and hands for supple, younger skin all over.
3. Drink plenty of water.
Not only will drinking water help to moisturize your skin from the inside out, but water has many other beauty benefits as well. Water acts as a natural purifier, removing toxins from cells and flushing them out of the body. The result is cleaner, smoother skin with less acne. Drinking water keeps you and your skin hydrated, skin that is hydrated tends to retain its elasticity and prolongs wrinkles.
Experts agree, we should be drinking eight full glasses of water a day. Avoid beverages that, though they contain water, may have other ingredients that are not good for your skin. While milk and juice can be counted towards your daily water intake, you should avoid caffeine and alcohol in excess. Excessive caffeine and alcohol intake can noticeably cause dehydration. Be sure to drink plenty of water along with these beverages.
4. Watch what you eat.
We’ve heard it said hundreds of times; you are what you eat. Though very clichéd, it is very true. Maintaining a well balanced, healthy diet will not only work wonders for your body, but your skin will applaud you too. Fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C are an excellent choice. The anti-oxidants in foods like citrus fruits and leafy, green vegetables promote collagen, which maintains skin’s elasticity. Foods rich in vitamin E, such as certain fish, nuts and fruits are great ways to hydrate and protect your skin as well.
While certain foods are wonderful ways to help your skin look younger, there are foods to avoid too. Studies that have shown that people who ate large amount of trans and saturated fats, as well as processed carbohydrates often had more wrinkles. While some fats are necessary in our diets, stay away from those that do not come from a natural source.
5. Be gentle.
Lastly, be kind to your skin. Know your skin type and use products that have been developed for it. When putting on moisturizer, creams, foundation or make-up, always start at the outside of the eyes and work your finger in towards your nose; do not pull on the skin under your eyes. Wear sunglasses so you do not have to squint in the sunlight. Get plenty of sleep, you’ll feel better and you’ll look better. And, don’t be afraid to pamper yourself. Treat yourself to a professional facial or apply an all-natural mask on at home. Be good to yourself and you will shed stress and years off your face.
You do not need to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on painful procedures to appear younger. Develop some easy and cheaper habits while young, and continue them. Maintaining these healthy habits will certainly slow or reduce the signs of aging.
