What are the latest and greatest hair loss treatments and is there hope on the horizon for male baldness? One thing for sure, thousands of men hope so! A cure for hair loss would not only be great for men and their ego, it would also be an incredibly profitable product for the company that uncovers the secret. As a result, R&D departments are working overtime on the solution.
The cure for hair loss, according to leading researchers, will come from gene therapy. The results from initial research and most researchers believe a solution will be available within the next decade. The current cures are moving from labs to clinical trials as we speak.  So what options do men have now?
Rogaine and Propecia are the most encouraging products available today. Rogaine uses minoxidil to improve blood flow to the scalp and Propecia uses finasteride to block the development of DHT, the hormone that causes hair loss. Most men use these two products at the same time to put the double whammy on hair loss. These solutions are typically effective in stopping hair loss, but rarely do they promote regrowth.
One off label therapy is Avodart. It is a powerful drug that blocks both types of enzymes that create DHT. Avodart comes with some potentially serious side effects and should be used only with a doctors permission and guidance. Typical side effects include decreased libido and ejaculation disorders and is typically not recommended for younger men.
Hair transplant surgery is good solution but very costly. It is the leading method for hair loss and baldness. The process is simple, the doctor takes healthy hair from non balding areas of the scalp and implants them into the balding areas. Hair transplants do work and are most appropriate for men who have not benefited from medical treatment such as Rogaine and Propecia.
Another product that is advertised aggressively is the Hair Max laser comb. It was cleared by the FDA in 2007. The laser comb provides increased blood flow to the scalp, similar to Minoxidil. Some researchers remain skeptical due to the small sample size in the clinical studies, but some men have reported good results.
There are some natural treatments on the marketplace that are less proven, such as Saw Palmetto and Pumpkin Seed Oil. These solutions have not been proven with any clinical trials and typically have a high level of placebo effect.
The fact is that the cure for hair loss should arrive in our lifetimes, to the delight of men everywhere. The market is too large and the improved research, particularly in gene therapy, dictates that hope is on the way. In the meantime, men will receive the best bang for their buck and time with Rogaine and Propecia.
