Amid the doom and gloom surrounding our country, some cities are focusing on the good things. Atlanta has been dealt a debilitating blow due to the current economic crisis. But it still has plenty of positive things to do and see, many of them for free or affordable prices. It’s a good sign when a city pulls itself up by its bootstraps by highlighting some of its more pleasing attractions. It is a testament to its people and their love for their home.

One way to spend a nice weekend morning is to visit one of Atlanta’s nine Farmer’s markets. Most of the food and goods offered here are grown regionally, and they support the do it yourself mentality that many foodies are embracing.

The Alpharetta Famers’ Market on Old Roswell Street offers pies, honey, herbs and spices and it’s in the middle of Alpharetta’s downtown district.

The Atlanta State Farmers’ Market, located in Forest Park, is one of the country’s largest, with over 150 acres of stalls and booths. It offers everything you think might be at a market, and more.

The East Atlanta Village Farmers’ Market showcases locally grown produce; it had homegrown art and music. It runs from May to November.

The Green Market for Piedmont Park, in Midtown, is the largest outdoor market. It features produce, baked goods, flowers and fresh cheeses. Oftentimes, the market offers chef demos.

The Marietta Square Farmers’ Market in Marietta Square is one of Metro Atlanta’s largest. It usually has about 40 vendors that sell an assortment of organic produce, baked goods, flowers and herbs.

The Northside Farmers’ Market in South Buckhead reflects Atlanta’s diverse urban community. It offers fresh baked croissant and artisanal cheeses and produce. It is easy to get to and centrally located, which makes it one of the city’s most popular markets.

The Peachtree Road Farmers’ Market, also in South Buckhead, is an open-air market that specializes in locally grown produce. It sells arts and crafts, jewelry and a large assortment of foods.

Each of these farmers markets reflect the best of Atlanta. They let people know that even amid the doom and gloom, there is reason to be happy, and affordable and pleasant ways to explore your city and enjoy its many offerings.
