Finding Antiques
There is an art and a science to finding antiques. There is no one place that is perfect or even best, in fact it is often luck, for finding a decent product. Many times buyers and dealers will search at antique shows, garage and estate sales, junk piles, or stores for the right piece.
The process of finding antiques is often referred to as antiquing. This is the quest for the right piece at the right price. One of the best options for finding what you are looking for at a reasonable price is in someone else’s junk. This means that serious buyers and dealers will search through garage sales, estate sales, junk piles on trash pickup day, and anywhere else they can find. This is where the real secret to proper antiquing lies. Usually, on garage sale days, antique buyers will get up earlier than everyone else, speed from sale to sale trying to get an early glance at the goods, and see if there is any gold in the piles of junk. By far this is the most frugal, but sometimes downright dangerous, way to find quality pieces at low prices.
The other option, usually chosen by the novice antique buyer, of finding antiques is at shows and stores. There are a number of large antique shows held in various cities around the country, and just about every city has at least a couple of antique stores. Although you may find high quality antiques at shows and stores, it is unlikely that you will find any deals. If you are looking for pieces and don’t want to compete with the hoards of experienced buyers and dealers for the lowest prices then this is your best bet.
