Most common side effects from taking tadalafil

Every drug either over the counter or prescription have side effects. Tadalafil is no exception; there are less serious side effects and more serious ones. Stop taking tadalafil and contact your doctor right away if you experience an allergic reaction such as hives, swelling of the tongue and throat or difficulty breathing.

Less serious side effects of tadalafil

The most common side effects to tadalafil include flushing which is a warmth and redness in your face not unlike blushing, though blushing is milder. Stuffy nose or sore throat may occur while taking tadalafil as well but can be staunched by a cough drop or over the counter nose spray.

Other side effects include diarrhea, headache, and muscle and back pain. If you experience any of these symptoms it usually isn’t anything to worry about unless it persists or becomes bothersome.

More serious side effects of tadalafil

If you experience any of these side effects while taking tadalafil, contact an emergency physician immediately.

• Sudden loss of vision
• Ringing in your ears or hearing loss
• Chest pain or heavy feeling in the chest spreading to the arm or shoulder.
• Irregular heartbeat
• Swelling in hands, ankles, or feet
• Shortness of breath
• Vision changes
• Seizure or convulsions
• Feeling light headed, fainting
• Painful erection
• Erection lasting longer than four hours

Priapism or an erection lasting longer than 4 hours

There are two types of priapism, non- ischemic and ischemic. Non-ischemic priapism usually happens when the penis has been injured. If an artery that runs into the corpus cavernosum of the penis ruptures, blood can spill into the erectile tissues. The blood can flow in and out, but the outflow is not sufficient enough to shrink the erection. As a result a man with a non- ischemic priapism will have a semi rigid penis for hours on end. It often clears up on its own and treatment usually consists of an ice pack.

Ischemic priapism usually is caused by medications used for erectile dysfunction including sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil. In the case of ischemic priapism, blood flows into the penis, but not out. The loss of circulation deprives the corpora cavernosa of oxygen and causes a painful rigid erection. If left untreated the loss of oxygen can damage the erectile tissues in the penis and cause formation of scar tissue that can lead to permanent loss of function and even gangrene which calls for a penile amputation.

Treatment for the ischemic priapism is usually therapeutic aspiration. The doctor puts a needle into the side of the penis and draws blood directly from the cavernosa. A needle is sometimes used to inject saline solution into the penis, which will help flush out the rest of the blood. This method only works about 25 percent to 30 percent of the time.

Another treatment consists of the doctor injecting the penis with drugs that will constrict the arteries and cut off the penile blood flow. The injections are given every couple of minutes for about an hour.
