When is Downloading Music Legal?

Thanks to a huge amount of media coverage demonising the world of music downloads, many people find that they are increasingly unsure of the legalities of downloading tunes. With various threats by the government to crack down on illegal downloaders by anything from cutting off their internet service to fines and even jail time, it’s easy to see why people might get paranoid about using the internet for getting new music.

However, downloading music can be perfectly legal – if you go through the correct services.

There are plenty of websites and services you can enjoy discovering old and new favourites without breaking the law. These services are ones that have obtained all the appropriate licenses to comply with copyright laws. They will charge users, either on a monthly basis or per song or per album basis.

Music is not yet free and artists still need to make a living, so if you find any site offering music for free, be wary of it – there is a high chance that if you download anything from it, you will be breaking the law. What’s more, illegal sharing sites frequently possess malware and various security threats to your PC. By downloading files from such sites, you could be exposing your computing to massive risks that could render it useless if a malicious virus is hidden in your download.

So what makes some music downloading sites illegal in the first place? Usually, it is because they are distributing copyrighted material that they do not have the right to distribute – we are all aware of this law and how copyright means that the media we purchase can only be consumed in certain ways. If a website wants to sell music, it must obtain a license to do so or else it will be in breach of copyright.

The majority of illegal download websites, however, are not in it to make money from selling music. They can make money out of online advertising and instead offer a service where like minded users can share files across the internet without having to pay for the privilege. This is, again, a copyright breach – and serves as a reminder of the other hint that a site may be illegal – when downloads are free.

Downloading is legal when it comes from trusted vendors and it’s very clear that the appropriate licenses have been obtained. You can enjoy mp3 music downloads over the internet without worrying about the law when you go through such sites – so choose a reliable company when signing up and enjoy discovering new music.
